Illustraties van de wereld om ons heen

Met een brein als een klein chaotisch ateliertje is Lizzy altijd druk bezig met... tja wat niet. Eigenlijk zit ze nooit stil. En dat is goed terug te zien in de manier waarop ze haar illustraties op papier zet.

De wereld om haar heen
Lizzy heeft een fascinatie voor gekke karakters, mensen, kamers, planten en nog heel veel meer. Van jongs af aan zet Lizzy de mensen en dingen om haar heen om in illustraties, zodat ze later op een leuke manier terug kan kijken op haar leven. Wat begon als een leuke manier om later op haar leven terug te kijken is uitgegroeid naar een droom en toekomstvisie. 'We zitten tegenwoordig altijd op onze mobiel, in mijn illustraties wil ik laten zien dat er veel meer is dan dat! Verbinden door creativiteit, dat is mijn doel'.

Klein chaotisch ateliertje
Lizzy's illustraties zijn net als haar brein, lekker chaotisch. Op dit moment studeert ze aan de Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. 'Ik ben nu bezig met mijn 2e studiejaar Illustratie. Later wil ik dit graag uitbreiden naar visueel ontwerpen omdat ik een erg brede kijk heb op het maken van kunst.' Het gebruik van verschillende technieken is voor haar ook heel belangrijk. 'Dit is een manier om de nieuwe ontwikkelingen in het vakgebied te volgen en mee te gaan met de tijd.'

Eefje Wentelteefje
Arme ouders... De muren zaten thuis namelijk helemaal vol met Lizzy's illustraties. 'Toen ik het programma Villa Achterwerk als klein kind leerde kennen wist ik zeker dat ik ook concepten wilde bedenken en kunnen tekenen als de kunstenaars in de afleveringen van Villa Achterwerk!' Haar grootste inspiratie komt dan ook van het programma 'Eefje Wentelteefje' door Jeroen De Leijer. 'De manier waarop hij illustreert en de verschillende karakters op papier zet, spreken mij erg aan!' Verschillende karakters, ook geinspireerd door van Kooten en de Bie, staan centraal in Lizzy's illustraties.

Illustratrice Lizzy is geboren in Leiden, maar woont tegenwoordig in het bruisende Amsterdam, waar zij zich laat inspireren door de mensen en bijzondere plekken om haar heen.

Lizzy Pikaar is 24 jaar oud en lekker bezig als kunstenares. Ze is laatste jaars illustratie student aan de Willem de Kooning Academie en werkt naast haar studie als Freelance Illustrator. Amsterdam is voor dit talent een erg fijne plek. Ze probeert zoveel mogelijk te wandelen om de Amsterdammers en de stad waar ze in leeft in zich op te nemen.

Waar komt de passie om te creëren vandaan?

Als kind was ik snel afgeleid en vond ik het leuker om naar buiten te kijken, naar de wereld en de mensen om mij heen, liever dan naar mijn rekenboek.
Mensen die langsliepen met een uitgesproken persoonlijkheid bijvoorbeeld. Personen die een andere uitstraling hadden dan de maatschappelijke norm. Juist deze mensen gaven mij een ander beeld, het echte leven wat mensen buiten de deur vaak gesloten houden. Ik begon hierdoor typetjes te creëeren. Het leukste vind ik als mensen een eigen verhaal bedenken bij de illustraties die ik maak. Een eigen wereld vol met imperfecties.

Wat (of wie) zijn jouw grootste inspiratie bronnen?

De kringloop. Oude, imperfecte spullen die juist in mijn ogen perfect zijn. Boeken of tijdschriften met thema's zoals planten, interieur of plaatjes uit de jaren 90. Ook haal ik veel inspiratie uit het dagelijks leven. Mensen die ik bijvoorbeeld tegenkom in het stadsleven. En pastelkleuren komen veel terug in mijn werk!

Wanneer heb je voor het laatst iets gemaakt en wat was het?

Ik ben dagelijks aan het tekenen voor mijn sociale media account Lizzarddesigns (Instagram). Daarnaast heb ik opdrachten lopen, dit zijn voornamelijk familieportretten en illustraties op aanvraag. Dat vind ik het leukste om te doen, want de reacties van deze mensen maken mij altijd blij. En het is leuk om te weten dat ik in vele huizen in Nederland hang.

Welke toekomst zie je voor jezelf?

Ik wil de wereld laten zien wie ik ben en wat ik maak. Hierdoor wil ik in de toekomst mijn eigen (online)winkel kunnen openen in Amsterdam of Leiden. Een winkel met mijn illustraties, spulletjes en kleding.
Ook hoop ik zoveel mogelijk mensen te inspireren in het creatief zijn!

What made you decide to become an illustrator?

I was born in Leiden, The Netherlands and grew up in a very creative and musical family. It started when I was a little girl with the age of seven, I had an computer in my room and I was always drawing little stories in MS Paint. I would print it out and read it before I went to sleep. My father (who has a fascination for art as well ) and I were always busy trying new stuff like clay animation or dancing in front of a camera with cool visual effects. When I got a little older, I was always watching other Dutch illustrators on tv and I was a huge fan of the Dutch television show called "Villa Achterwerk." Since then, it became one of my inspirations to become an illustrator. I always wanted to work for a tv show like that or make my own animated show in the future, so I decided to take a shot and I applied to the Willem De Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Can you tell us a little bit about your style? How has it progressed, or changed, over the years?

All of my illustrations are drawing by hand, but the I pick the colors in Photoshop. My illustrations are playful, funny and a little quirky like my personality. The illustrations are not perfect, I love that its unique and not trying to be perfect. Before this, I was always trying different things like aquarelle and acrylic paintings, but I like how the digital style looks. So for now I'm working with this and maybe it will change in the past years who knows

What influences/influenced your characters and subject matter?

My inspiration comes from a lot of different things. I'm always searching for funny typical Dutch stories by people in the papers, and making my own character from it. I think I'm obsessed with the 90s. I get inspired by movies or rooms from the 90s. One of my favorite 90s tv show is "Beavis and Butthead" by Mike Judge, it has a huge influence on my work. It's amazing how everything fits well. I think you can easily find those influences back in my work. Also"Bob's Burgers" is one of my favorite show from this time. Love the colors as well!

What are some styles or visual trends you appreciate in the world of illustration?

I really like new technology developments in the world of illustration. The new Virtual Reality Glasses is something that I really want to work on in the future. I think everything is becoming digital and mostly 3D, so I want to learn more about this new trend.

What is a typical day like for you?

In the morning I always answering my emails and watch some tv. I go to school almost everyday where I am working on my illustrations skills. My school-days aren't very long, so when school is over, I'm always eating and watching some good series. I also draw in my sketchbook everyday. When I see something good in my sketchbook, I immediately start making new work for my website / instagram.

How do you stay motivated and creative?

Well, sometimes it's hard especially with Netflix haha, but I'm always being creative. I am always seeing things in my environment that inspire me. Eating is also a good way to stay motivated. You can cook your favorite meal and eat it while working on some projects!

How would you describe what art means to you?

Art is my life and my life means a lot to me. It's a way of expressing my personality.

What do you like to do when you're not illustrating?

I love to find some vintage treasures and look for clothes at the local thrift-stores. I'm also busy redesigning my house! I am always finding something new to do

What are you 2018 goals?

I would love to make some animations in 2018. I really want to make an illustration/animation instagram about one of my characters.

What is your favorite song, band, or artist to listen to while you're illustrating and animating??

My favorite album while I'm Illustrating is Definitely from The Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust. It brings some old memories up from when I was a little kid and also its very energetic to illustrate on it.
